Tributes have poured in from across the digital infrastructure industry following the announcement that Her Majesty the Queen, the country’s longest-reigning monarch, died at Balmoral yesterday aged 96.
The UK is mourning the loss of its longest-serving Monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II who passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle nestled in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, at the age of 96 this Thursday, September 8, 2022.
The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous societal, cultural, and evolutionary change across key historical moments like the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War, the UK’s entry into – and withdrawal from – the European Union, and to the birth of the computing age.
Her son, now King Charles III, said in a heartfelt statement that the death of his beloved mother was a “moment of great sadness” for him and his family and that her loss would be “deeply felt” around the world.
“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother,” he said.
“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
The Queen’s children travelled to Balmoral after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.
Her grandson and now heir to the throne, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, also gathered there.
The UK’s Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday in what was her last public constitutional duty, said the monarch was the rock on which modern Britain was built, who had “provided us with the stability and strength that we needed”.
Truss was the Queen’s 15th Prime Minister, born in 1975, 101 years after the Monarch’s first PM Winston Churchill’s birth in 1874.
Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926, the Queen’s state funeral – the first since Churchill’s in 1965 – is expected to take place at Westminster Abbey in less than two weeks. The exact day will be confirmed by Buckingham Palace.
The death of the Queen, who visited more than 100 countries across six continents during her reign, has sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the world, including the digital infrastructure industry, which has greatly benefited from deep change and advancements during Her 70-year reign.
