Equinix (NASDAQ: EQIX) has opened HK6, its sixth International Business Exchange data centre in Hong Kong.
The facility is equipped with liquid-cooling technology and is designed to support AI and other high-density workloads that require higher power density and thermal efficiency.
Equinix has made an initial investment of US$124 million in HK6. The first phase provides 1,000 cabinets, with capacity expected to increase to 3,550 cabinets at full build-out.
The launch comes as Hong Kong looks to advance its technology and AI agenda, including through the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park.
HK6 is interconnected with Equinix’s existing campus and the innovation park, giving enterprises, tenants and startups access to digital infrastructure across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
The facility will also support Equinix’s recently announced AI Discovery Hub with HPE and NVIDIA. The hub is intended to give enterprises and startups a testing environment to build, test, and validate AI applications before wider deployment.
Equinix said the setup will allow companies to assess workflow performance and compatibility in hybrid and multicloud environments before committing to full-scale AI rollouts.
HK6 also supports Equinix Fabric, which allows enterprises to connect distributed infrastructure across Equinix’s global ecosystem.
Fabric Intelligence adds observability and AI-driven insights to help manage connectivity across distributed environments, including provisioning, optimisation, and maintenance.
“Hong Kong stands at the forefront of Asia-Pacific’s digital future, and the launch of HK6 marks another significant step in our strategy to build the infrastructure that will power the AI era,” said Cyrus Adaggra, President, Asia-Pacific, Equinix.
Adaggra added capacity, resilience, and connectivity for customers using Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area for digital and AI workloads. The facility was designed with energy efficiency and sustainability considerations as Equinix expands its digital infrastructure footprint in the region.
In Hong Kong, Equinix now operates six IBX data centres across key locations. Its Tsuen Wan campus includes HK1, HK2, HK3, and HK6, which are clustered to support low-latency interconnection between networks, cloud providers, AI service providers, and enterprises.
Equinix said the Hong Kong campus is designed to support hybrid multicloud architectures, mission-critical workloads, and AI-driven applications, while meeting data sovereignty requirements.
Equinix said HK6 will operate with 100% renewable energy coverage, in line with its target to reach full renewable coverage across its retail IBX footprint by 2030.
The company said the facility also supports its local sustainability work in Hong Kong, aligned with the government’s Climate Action Plan 2050.
Globally, Equinix operates more than 280 data centres across 77 markets in 36 countries, serving more than 10,500 businesses.
In the Asia Pacific, its portfolio includes 65 data centres across Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.
