European AI hyperscaler Nscale and prefabricated AI data centre manufacturer InfraPartners have announced a collaborative venture to expand an existing 30MW facility in Glomfjord, Norway.
The project aims to create a 60MW data centre optimised for AI applications, scheduled to commence operations in the second quarter of 2025.
The expanded facility will house the latest generation of graphics processing units (GPUs) designed specifically for AI workloads.
The development positions Nscale as a prominent player in Europe’s AI infrastructure landscape.
InfraPartners will employ a modular, prefabricated approach for the facility’s expansion.
The method is designed to expedite deployment, enhance cost-efficiency, and ensure future scalability.
The off-site manufacturing process is expected to yield higher quality standards, reduce on-site labour requirements, and accelerate project timelines, resulting in significant cost reductions.
Harqs Singh, Chief Technology Officer at InfraPartners, said: “InfraPartners has developed the first fully modular data centre for AI workloads. We are changing the way data centres are built. Our approach secures supply chains, drives standardisation, accelerates site deployment, and offers design flexibility to accommodate future GPU technology roadmaps.
“We are thrilled to partner with Nscale to deploy a sustainable data centre in Glomfjord. By partnering with us, Nscale will benefit from a globally standardised design, flexibility to deploy different types of GPUs, and faster time to revenue.”
The Glomfjord Industrial Park, where Nscale’s data centre is situated, offers access to 100% renewable local hydroelectric energy.
The sustainable power source is expected to minimise the environmental impact of AI compute operations while ensuring reliable, high-performance functionality.
The facility will incorporate advanced liquid cooling technology to efficiently manage the thermal requirements of the latest GPUs, aiming to achieve optimal performance without compromising energy efficiency.
Alex Sharp, Chief Operating Officer at Nscale, added: “Glomfjord offers an ideal location for an AI data centre. With an existing 30MW site and access to an abundance of hydroelectric power, this expansion to 60MW allows us to provide sustainable AI compute with European data sovereignty at a more affordable cost compared with competitors.
“This facility represents a landmark step in creating scalable, sustainable AI infrastructure. As the first European hyperscaler, Nscale is ready to deliver AI compute at scale.”
The financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed. However, the project’s scale and the involvement of two significant players in the AI infrastructure space suggest a substantial investment in Norway’s digital infrastructure landscape.
